Maqsud-e-hunar soz-e-hayat-e-abadi hai

Ye ek nafas ya do nafas misl-e-sharar kya

Jis se dil-e-dariya mutalatim nahin hota

Ai qatra-e-naisan woh sadaf kya, woh guhar kya

Shair ki nawa ho ke mughanni ka nafas ho

Jis se chaman afsurda ho woh bad-e-sahar kya

Be-mojiza duniya mein ubharti nahin qaumen

Jo zarb-e-kalimi nahin rakhta woh hunar kya!

About this nazm

"The Fine Arts": five couplets. A taste for beauty is good, but sight that does not see the truth of things is no sight. The aim of art is the fire of lasting life, not a spark that lives a breath or two; a pearl that does not stir the ocean's heart, a dawn breeze that leaves the garden wilted, is worth nothing. Nations do not rise without a miracle, and art without the strike of Moses' staff is no art.
