نالے کا آج دل سے پھر لب تلک گزر ہے

ٹک گوش رکھیو ایدھر ساتھ اس کے کچھ خبر ہے

naale ka aaj dil se phir lab talak guzar hai

tuk gosh rakhiyo idhar saath us ke kuchh khabar hai

About this ghazal

Today a lament is rising again from the heart to the lips, Mir warns, so listen closely, for it carries news. The ghazal reminds the lovers of rank that whoever wears a crown today may have neither crown nor head tomorrow, pictures spring grass on the stream's edge as the lashes of a wet eye, and gives the famous image of a candle at the end of the night: hear my story now, for by morning it will be cut short. The poet sees himself as a dry tree with neither shade nor fruit, and the closing couplet urges him to write one more ghazal in this pattern while pen and mood are both willing. 4 couplets of the original are not included here.
