khowen hain neend meri museebat-bayaaniyaan

tum bhi to ek raat suno ye kahaaniyaan

sohbat rakha kiya wo safeeh-o-zalaal se

dil hi mein khoon hua keen meri nukta-daaniyaan

be-lutfiyaan yahi yahi na-mehrbaaniyaan

talwaar ke tale hi gaya ahd-e-inbisaat

mar mar ke ham ne kaati hain apni jawaaniyaan

gaali siwaae mujh se sukhan mat kiya karo

achchhi lage hain mujh ko tiri bad-zabaaniyaan

ghairon hi ke sukhan ki taraf gosh-e-yaar the

us harf-na-shunau ne hamaari na maaniyaan

ye be-qaraariyaan na kabhu un ne dekhiyaan

jaan-kaahiyaan hamaari bahut sahl jaaniyaan

About this ghazal

Telling his own misfortunes keeps Mir awake at night, and he asks the beloved to sit up just one night and hear these stories too. The ghazal mourns subtle gifts that turned to blood inside the heart in the company of fools, a youth cut short under the sword, and a beloved who listened only to rivals. In a playful turn the poet says even the beloved's abuse sounds sweet to him, so speak to him only in insults; the closing couplet complains that he was killed along with the rivals, as if all his devotion counted for nothing. 1 couplet of the original is not included here.
