About this ghazal

If the poet were gone, Mir tells the beloved, they would have to give up their airs, for someone must be there to offer devotion. Don't look at the opening narcissus bud; look at the beloved's half-open lashes instead. In this narrow world the poet never slept his fill, since there was no room even to stretch his legs; if he has lost his patience with people, he is finished, because one needs the temper to get along with everyone. Tears are best swallowed to keep the secret, for a wet eye gives everything away, and his whole body has turned yellow as gold from a melting heart. 2 couplets of the original are not included here.
