kasrat-e-daagh se dil rashk-e-gulistaan na hua

mera dil-khwaah jo kuchh tha wo kabhu yaan na hua

ji to aise kai sadqe kiye tujh par lekin

go tavajjoh se zamaane ki jahaan mein mujh ko

jaah-o-sarwat ka muyassar sar-o-saamaan na hua

shukr sad shukr ki main zillat-o-khwaari ke sabab

kisi unwaan mein ham-chashm-e-azeezaan na hua

kaun si raat zamaane mein gai jis mein 'Mir'

seena-e-chaak se main dast-o-girebaan na hua

About this ghazal

For all its scars, Mir says, the heart never became the envy of a garden, and nothing he wished for ever came to pass here. He gave his life for the beloved many times over, and the pity is that the beloved never felt even a little sorry. The world's favour never brought him rank or wealth, yet he is grateful that his disgrace kept him from ever competing with friends. The closing couplet asks which night ever passed when Mir was not wrestling with his own torn chest. 3 couplets of the original are not included here.
