Tujhe kyuñ fikr hai ai gul dil-e-sad-chāk-e-bulbul ki

Tu apne pairahan ke chāk to pehle rafu kar le

Na reh minnat-kash-e-shabnam, nigūñ jām o subū kar le

Koi dastār meñ rakh le, koi zeb-e-gulū kar le

Chaman meñ ghuncha-e-gul se ye keh kar uṛ gai shabnam

Mazāq-e-jaur-e-gulchīñ ho to paida rang o bū kar le

Agar manzūr ho tujh ko khizāñ-nā-āshna rehna

Jahān-e-rang o bū se, pehle qat-e-ārzū kar le

Isi meñ dekh, muzmar hai kamāl-e-zindagi tera

Jo tujh ko zīnat-e-dāman koi āīna-rū kar le

About this nazm

Advice spoken to a rose. Instead of worrying over the nightingale's torn heart, it should mend its own torn robe; honour in the garden of life comes from learning to live among thorns. The dew tells the bud that a flower plucked to adorn a turban or a neck has lost its self-respect, and that to stay untouched by autumn it must first give up such longings.
