Ai Humāyūñ! zindagi teri sarāpa soz thi

Teri chingāri chirāgh-e-anjuman-afroz thi

Garche tha tera tan-e-khākī nazār o dard-mand

Thi sitāre ki tarah raushan tiri tab’-e-buland

Kis qadar be-bāk dil is nātavāñ paikar meñ tha

Shola-e-gardūñ-navard ik musht-e-khākistar meñ tha

Maut ki lekin dil-e-dāna ko kuchh parva nahīñ

Shab ki khāmoshi meñ juz hangāma-e-farda nahīñ

Maut ko samjhe haiñ ghāfil ikhtitām-e-zindagi

Hai ye shām-e-zindagi, subh-e-davām-e-zindagi

About this nazm

An elegy for Justice Shah Din, who wrote under the name Humayun. The poet remembers a life that burned with feeling and lit up every gathering: a frail, ailing body that held a fearless heart, like a flame rising from a handful of ash. He ends by saying that a wise heart does not fear death, which the careless take for the end of life but which is only life's evening and the morning of a lasting life.
