kahte hain kabhi gosht na khata tha Maarri

phal phul pe karta tha hamesha guzar-auqat

ye khvan-e-tar-o-taza Maarri ne jo dekha

kahne laga vo sahib-e-Ghufran-o-Luzumat

ai murghak-e-bechara! zara ye to bata tu

tera vo gunah kya tha ye hai jis ki mukafat?

hai jurm-e-zaifi ki saza marg-e-mufajat!

About this nazm

A short story poem about the Arab poet-philosopher Abul Ala al-Maarri (973–1057), who was known for never eating meat. A friend tests him by sending a roasted partridge, and Maarri asks the little bird what crime earned it this fate. The answer has become one of Iqbal's best-known lines: since the beginning, fate has ruled that the punishment for weakness is sudden death.
