Jami at-Tirmidhi (Volume 1)

Jami at-Tirmidhi, also known as Sunan at-Tirmidhi, is one of the six major collections of hadith (the Sihah Sitta). It was compiled in the third century Hijri by Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa at-Tirmidhi (d. 279 AH / 892 CE), a student of Imam al-Bukhari, and is valued for how clearly it is arranged by subject.

What sets the collection apart is what the compiler adds after the narrations. He grades each hadith (sahih, hasan, gharib and combinations of these terms), names other Companions who reported on the same subject, and records how early jurists such as Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ishaq ibn Rahwayh, Sufyan al-Thawri and Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak understood it. The book therefore serves as a hadith collection and as a reference for comparative fiqh.

This is the first of six volumes of the English translation by Abu Khaliyl, published by Darussalam in 2007. Each hadith appears in Arabic with its English translation, followed by a grading by Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai and short explanatory comments.

Volume 1 opens with the publisher's foreword and the translator's introduction, a short life of Imam at-Tirmidhi and a guide to the terms he uses. It then covers hadith 1 to 543: the chapters on purification (Taharah), the prayer (Salat), Witr, Friday (Jumu'ah) and the two Eids.
