Kal jo rukh-e-araq-fishan yaar ne tuk dikha diya

Pani chhidak ke khwab se fitne ko phir jaga diya

Mera aur us ka ikhtilat ho gaya misl-e-abr-o-barq

Us ne mujhe rula diya main ne use hansa diya

Main hoon patang kaghazi dor hai us ke haath mein

Chaha idhar ghata diya chaha idhar badha diya

Teshe ki kya majal thi ye jo tarashe Be-sutun

Tha wo tamam dil ka zor jis ne pahad dha diya

Shikwa hamara hai baja muft-baron se kis liye

Hum ne to apna dil diya hum ko kisi ne kya diya

About this ghazal

A lively ghazal on the "dikha diya / jaga diya" rhyme. Its images include lovers as cloud and lightning, one weeping and the other laughing, and the poet as a paper kite whose string is in the beloved's hand. Farhad's mountain fell to the force of the heart, not the axe. "I gave my heart; what did anyone give me?" 4 couplets of the original are not included here.
