Agar hai manzur ye ki howe hamare sine ka dagh thanda

To aa lipatiye gale se ae jaan jhamak se kar jhap chiragh thanda

Hum aur tum jaan ab is qadar to mohabbaton mein hain ek tan man

Lagaya tum ne jabin pe sandal hua hamara dimagh thanda

Labon se lagte hi ho gayi thi tamam sardi dil-o-jigar mein

Darakht bhige hain kal ke meinh se chaman chaman mein bhara hai pani

Jo sair kije to aaj sahib ajab tarah ka hai bagh thanda

Wahi hai kamil Nazir is ja wahi hai raushan-dil ae azizo

About this ghazal

A ghazal on the refrain "thanda" (cool), in a long, flowing metre. Every couplet finds something that cools: an embrace that soothes the burning scar in the chest, sandal paste on the forehead, a cup from the saqi, a garden washed by yesterday's rain. The last couplet turns it around: the truly enlightened person is the one whose inner lamp is never cooled by the winds of the world. Given in full.
