زباں رکھ غنچہ ساں اپنے دہن میں

بندھی مٹھی چلا جا اس چمن میں

Zaban rakh ghuncha-saan apne dahan mein

Bandhi mutthi chala ja is chaman mein

نہیں رہتا چراغ ایسی پون میں

About this ghazal

Keep your tongue in your mouth like a closed bud and pass through this garden with your fist shut. Mir's advice opens a ghazal of quiet ruin: a lover still awake in his shroud, a lamp that cannot live in such wind, wisdom that became a chain, and a poet melted away by love until only the shape of him is left in his clothes. The ghazal is given in full.
