Tang aaye hain dil us jee se utha baithenge

Bhookon marte hain kuchh ab yaar bhi kha baithenge

Ab ke bigdegi agar un se to is shahr se ja

Kisu virane mein takiya hi bana baithenge

Maarka garm to tuk hone do khoon-rezi ka

Pahle talwar ke neeche hamin ja baithenge

Hoga aisa bhi koi roz ke majlis se kabhu

Hum to ek aadh ghadi uth ke juda baithenge

Ja na izhar-e-mohabbat pe hawasnakon ki

Waqt ke waqt ye sab munh ko chhupa baithenge

Dekhen woh ghairat-e-khurshid kahan jaata hai

Ab sar-e-raah dam-e-subh se aa baithenge

Bheed talti hi nahin aage se us zalim ke

Gardanen yaar kisi roz kata baithenge

Kab talak galiyon mein saudai se phirte rahiye

Dil ko us zulf-e-musalsal se laga baithenge

Shola-afshan agar aisi hi rahi aah to Mir

Ghar ko hum apne kisu raat jala baithenge

About this ghazal

A ghazal of threats the lover will never carry out, each ending in "baithenge" — we will end up doing it: giving up on life, leaving the city for a hut in some wilderness, sitting first under the sword, waiting at dawn on the beloved's road. It closes with the fear that one night his own fiery sighs will burn his house down.
