taaqat nahin hai dil mein ne ji baja raha hai

kya naaz kar rahe ho ab hum mein kya raha hai

jeb aur aasteen se rone ka kaam guzra

saara nichod ab to daaman par aa raha hai

raaz-e-mohabbat apna kis se chhupa raha hai

dekh is dahan ko har dam ai aarsi ki yun hi

khoobi ka dar kisu ke munh par bhi wa raha hai

we lutf ki nigaahen pahle fareb hain sab

kis se wo be-murawwat phir aashna raha hai

itna khizaan kare hai kab zard rang par yaan

rahte hain daagh aksar naan-o-namak ki khaatir

jeene ka is samen mein ab kya maza raha hai

Link to this couplet

ab chaahta nahin hai bosa jo tere lab se

jeene se Mir shaayad kuchh dil utha raha hai

About this ghazal

A ghazal of exhaustion. No strength is left in the heart and no life in the body, so what is the beloved still being proud about? Weeping has gone past the pocket and sleeve and now soaks the whole hem; the secret of love has gone too far to hide. Mir says the kind looks of the start are all deceit, that the struggle for bread and salt leaves little joy in living, and ends quietly: if he no longer wants a kiss from the beloved's lips, perhaps his heart is lifting off from life itself. 2 couplets of the original are not included here.
