Raat guzre hai mujhe naza mein rote rote

Aankhen phir jaayengi ab subh ke hote hote

Khol kar aankh ura deed jahan ka ghafil

Khwab ho jaaye ga phir jaagna sote sote

Daagh ugte rahe dil mein meri naumeedi se

Haara main tukhm-e-tamanna ko bhi bote bote

Ji chala tha ke tere hont mujhe yaad aaye

La'l paaen hain main is ji hi ke khote khote

Jam gaya khoon kaf-e-qatil pe tarah Mir z-bas

About this ghazal

The night passes in the last agony, and by morning the eyes will have turned. Built on doubled verbs (rote rote, sote sote, bote bote), the ghazal urges the heedless to look at the world while awake, tells of a heart that sowed hope until it gave up, and ends with the killer's hand that would not come clean however long it was washed. The ghazal is given in full.
