khoob the we din ki hum tere giraftaaron mein the

gham-zadon andoh-geenon zulm ke maaron mein the

dushmani jaani hai ab to hum se ghairon ke liye

ik samaan sa ho gaya wo bhi ki hum yaaron mein the

hum bhi ik sarv-e-rawaan ke naaz-bardaaron mein the

aah kya kya log zaalim tere beemaaron mein the

About this ghazal

A ghazal of looking back. Those were good days, Mir says, when he was among the beloved's captives, the grief-stricken and the wronged. Now the beloved is a sworn enemy for the sake of rivals, though there was a time when he too was counted among friends. He warns the turtledove not to strut over his dust, since he too once served a moving cypress. In the closing couplet heart and liver, his two companions in grief, are gone: one stayed caught in the row of eyelashes and the other was torn to pieces. 2 couplets of the original are not included here.
