ajab apna haal hota jo visal-e-yar hota

kabhi jaan sadqe hoti kabhi dil nisar hota

jo tumhari tarah tum se koi jhuthe wade karta

tumhin munsifi se kah do tumhein etibar hota

gham-e-ishq mein maza tha jo use samajh ke khate

ye wo zahr hai ki aakhir mai-e-khush-gawar hota

ye maza tha dil-lagi ka ki barabar aag lagti

na tujhe qarar hota na mujhe qarar hota

na maza hai dushmani mein na hai lutf dosti mein

koi ghair ghair hota koi yar yar hota

tire wade par sitamgar abhi aur sabr karte

agar apni zindagi ka hamein etibar hota

ye wo dard-e-dil nahin hai ki ho chara-saz koi

agar ek baar mitta to hazar baar hota

About this ghazal

Written in the same metre and rhyme as one of Ghalib's most famous ghazals, this is Dagh's lighter answer to it, built on "hota" (would be). He imagines what union with the beloved would be like, and teases: if anyone made you the false promises you make, would you believe them? 3 couplets of the original are not included here.
