Kehta hai zamane se yeh darvesh-e-jawan-mard

Jata hai jidhar banda-e-haq, tu bhi udhar ja!

Hangame hain mere teri taqat se ziyada

Bachta hua bungah-e-qalandar se guzar ja

Chadhta hua darya hai agar tu to utar ja

Toda nahin jadu meri takbir ne tera?

Hai tujh mein mukar jane ki jurat to mukar ja!

Mehr o mah o anjum ka muhasib hai qalandar

Ayyam ka markab nahin, rakib hai qalandar

About this nazm

A bold dervish speaks to the age itself: go where the servant of truth goes, or pass by quietly, for his storms are more than you can bear. He needs no boat or boatman; if the age is a rising river, let it fall. The closing couplet gives the poem its title: the qalandar keeps account of the sun, moon and stars, and rides the days instead of being carried by them.
