Ik fughan-e-be-sharar sine mein baqi reh gai

Soz bhi rukhsat hua, jati rahi taseer bhi

Mard-e-hur zindan mein hai be-neza-o-shamsheer aaj

Main pashiman hoon, pashiman hai meri tadbeer bhi

Khud-ba-khud zanjeer ki janib khincha jata hai dil

Thi isi faulad se shayad meri shamsheer bhi

Jo meri tegh-e-do-dam thi, ab meri zanjeer hai

Shokh-o-be-parwa hai kitna khaliq-e-taqdeer bhi!

About this nazm

The lament of al-Mu'tamid, king of Seville and an Arabic poet, imprisoned after his defeat. Only a sparkless cry is left in his chest; the fire and its power are gone. The free man sits in prison without lance or sword, ashamed of himself and of his plans. His heart is drawn to the chain, as if his sword had been forged from the same steel: the two-edged blade he carried has become his chain. How playful and carefree, he says, is the maker of fate.
