Us ki nafrat bhi amiq, us ki mohabbat bhi amiq

Qahr bhi us ka hai Allah ke bandon pe shafiq

Parwarish pata hai taqlid ki tariki mein

Hai magar us ki tabiyat ka taqaza takhliq

Anjuman mein bhi muyassar rahi khalwat us ko

Misl-e-khurshid-e-sahar fikr ki tabani mein

Baat mein sada o azada, maani mein daqiq

Us ka andaz-e-nazar apne zamane se juda

Us ke ahwal se mahram nahin piran-e-tariq

About this nazm

"The Great Man": a portrait in five couplets. His hate and his love both run deep, and even his anger is kind to God's servants. Raised in the darkness of imitation, his nature still demands creation; alone even in company, like the candle of a gathering he stands apart and befriends all. Simple and free in speech but subtle in meaning, he sees differently from his age.
