ghareeb-e-shahr hoon main, sun to le meri faryaad

ke tere seene mein bhi hon qayaamaten aabaad

meri nawa-e-gham-aalood hai mataa-e-azeez

jahaan mein aam nahin daulat-e-dil-e-naashaad

About this nazm

A stranger in the city asks to be heard, since the listener's heart too holds whole doomsdays. His grief-stained song is a precious possession, for a sad heart is rare wealth, and he complains that the tasteless age takes his labour for Farhad's. The poem closes with a quoted Persian couplet on the sound of the axe striking stone.
