Faqr jangah mein be-saz o yaraq aata hai

Zarb kari hai, agar sine mein hai qalb-e-salim

Taza har ahd mein hai qissa-e-Firaun o Kalim

Ab tera daur bhi aane ko hai ae faqr-e-ghayur

Kha gayi ruh-e-firangi ko hawa-e-zar-o-sim

Ishq o masti ne kiya zabt-e-nafas mujh pe haram

Ke girah ghunche ki khulti nahin be-mauj-e-nasim

About this nazm

A poem setting faqr, a proud and self-denying poverty of spirit, against kingship. Faqr comes to battle without arms, yet strikes hard when the heart is sound; its boldness renews in every age the story of Pharaoh and Moses. The poet says the time of faqr is near, since love of gold and silver has eaten the West's spirit, and love will not let him keep silent.
