Hum khugar-e-mehsoos hain sahil ke kharidar

Ik bahr-e-pur-ashob-o-pur-asrar hai Rumi

Tu bhi hai isi qafila-e-shauq mein Iqbal

Jis qafila-e-shauq ka salar hai Rumi

Is asr ko bhi us ne diya hai koi paigham?

Kehte hain charagh-e-rah-e-ahrar hai Rumi

Kah nabayad khurd-o-jau hamchun kharan

Aahuwana dar Khutan char arghawan

Har ke kah-o-jau khurad qurban shavad

Har ke noor-e-Haq khurad Quran shavad

About this nazm

A letter from Europe: we are used to what the senses grasp and buy only the shore, while Rumi is a stormy, mysterious sea. You too, Iqbal, travel in the caravan of longing that Rumi leads; has he any message for this age? They say he is a lamp on the road of the free. The answer, in two Persian couplets after the heading "Jawab": do not graze on straw and barley like donkeys, but on the arghawan flowers of Khotan like deer; whoever eats straw and barley is sacrificed, whoever feeds on God's light becomes the Quran.
