Havas bhi ho to nahīñ mujh meñ himmat-e-tag o tāz

Husūl-e-jāh hai vābasta-e-mazāq-e-talāsh

Hazār shukr, tabī’at hai reza-kār miri

Hazār shukr, nahīñ hai dimāgh fitna-tarāsh

Ye uqda-hā-e-siyāsat tujhe mubārak hoñ

Ki faiz-e-ishq se nākhun mira hai sīna-kharāsh

About this nazm

An answer to a letter that urged the poet to seek rank and favour. He replies that he has no taste for the chase that position demands; thankfully his nature is patient and his mind makes no mischief. His verse waters hearts like a rain cloud, and the knots of politics can stay with his friend. Courting the company of kings, he says, is a sign of a dead heart, and he closes with Hafiz: if you wish to sit with Khizr, stay hidden from Alexander's eye like the water of life.
