Dariya mein moti, ai mauj-e-be-bak

Sahil ki saughat! khar-o-khas o khak

Mere sharar mein bijli ke jauhar

Lekin neestan tera hai nam-nak

Aisa junun bhi dekha hai main ne

Jis ne siye hain taqdir ke chaak

Kamil wahi hai rindi ke fan mein

Masti hai jis ki be-minnat-e-tak

Rakhta hai ab tak maikhana-e-sharq

Ahl-e-nazar hain Europe se naumeed

In ummaton ke batin nahin pak

About this ghazal

A seven-couplet ghazal in short metre. The bold wave brings pearls in the river but only thorns, straw and dust as the shore's gift; the poet's spark holds lightning, but the reader's reed-bed is damp. Your age and its effect are your own doing, not the stars'. Madness can stitch the rents of fate, and the East's tavern still keeps a wine that lights the mind.
