Ik raat sitaron se kaha najm-e-sahar ne

Adam ko bhi dekha hai kisi ne kabhi bedar?

Kahne laga Mirrikh, ada-faham hai taqdir

Hai nind hi is chhote se fitne ko sazavar

Zuhra ne kaha, aur koi baat nahin kya?

Is kirmak-e-shab-kor se kya ham ko sarokar

Vaqif ho agar lazzat-e-bedari-e-shab se

Unchi hai Surayya se bhi ye khak-e-pur-asrar

Aghosh mein is ki vo tajalli hai ke jis mein

Kho jaenge aflak ke sab sabit o sayyar

Nagah faza bang-e-azan se hui labrez

Vo nara ke hil jata hai jis se dil-e-kuhsar

About this nazm

One night the morning star asks the other stars whether anyone has ever seen man awake. Mars says sleep suits him, Venus asks why they should care about this blind night-worm, and the full moon says he is an earthly star who shines by day. Whoever knows the joy of keeping awake at night, the poem says, finds this dust higher than the Pleiades. Then the sky fills with the call to prayer, a cry that shakes the heart of the mountains.
