aazaad ki rag sakht hai maanind-e-rag-e-sang

mahkoom ki rag narm hai maanind-e-rag-e-taak

mahkoom ka dil murda o afsurda o naumeed

aazaad ka dil zinda o pursoz o tarabnaak

aazaad ki daulat dil-e-raushan, nafas-e-garm

mahkoom ka sarmaaya faqat deeda-e-namnaak

mahkoom hai begaana-e-ikhlaas o murawwat

har chand ke mantiq ki daleelon mein hai chaalaak

mumkin nahin mahkoom ho aazaad ka hamdosh

woh banda-e-aflaak hai, ye khwaaja-e-aflaak

About this nazm

A nazm that sets the free man beside the subject one, line against line: the free man's vein is hard as stone and his heart alive and burning, while the subject's is soft as a vine, his heart dead and hopeless, his only wealth wet eyes. However clever in argument, the subject cannot stand shoulder to shoulder with the free: one is a slave of the heavens, the other their master.
