aaj woh Kashmir hai mahkoom o majboor o faqeer

kal jise ahl-e-nazar kehte the Iraan-e-sagheer

seena-e-aflaak se uthti hai aah-e-soznaak

mard-e-haq hota hai jab maroob-e-sultaan o ameer

keh raha hai daastaan bedardi-e-ayyaam ki

koh ke daaman mein woh gham-khaana-e-dehqaan-e-peer

aah! ye qaum-e-najeeb o charb-dast o tar-dimaagh

hai kahaan roz-e-mukaafaat ae Khuda-e-der-geer?

About this nazm

The poem says that Kashmir, which people of vision once called "little Iran", is today ruled, helpless and poor. A burning sigh rises when the man of truth is cowed by sultan and lord; the old farmer's house of grief at the foot of the mountain tells the story of cruel times, and the poet asks the slow-to-seize Lord where the day of reckoning is for this noble, skilful and bright people.
