dekhi na ek chashmak-e-gul bhi chaman mein aah

ham aakhir-e-bahaar qafas se riha hue

About this ghazal

The proud who rose to crown and banner in this world, Mir says, were trampled underfoot, and no one even knows what became of them. The poet was let out of the cage only at the very end of spring, without seeing a single rose wink in the garden; without the beloved he had no wish for the garden's company, and though a thousand flowers opened, his heart did not. The closing couplet finds relief in giving his head for love: a debt was on him, and at last it has been paid. 1 couplet of the original is not included here.
