kali kahte hain us ka sa dahan hai

suna kariye ki ye bhi ik sukhan hai

nahin daaman mein laala Be-sutoon ke

koi dil-daagh-e-khoon-e-kohkan hai

karun kya hasrat-e-gul ko wagarna

dil-e-pur-daagh bhi apna chaman hai

jo de aaraam tuk aawaargi 'Mir'

About this ghazal

They say the bud has a mouth like the beloved's, Mir begins, and one may as well listen: it is just one more thing people say. Every red tulip in the folds of Bisutun is the blood-stained heart of Farhad the mountain-digger. Longing for the rose is pointless, the poet says, when his own scarred heart is a garden; and the closing couplet hopes that if wandering ever gives a moment's rest, an evening far from home could feel like a morning back at home. 3 couplets of the original are not included here.
