Imam Tirmidhi

امام ترمذی

824–892 Also spelled: Imam Tirmizi, Imam al-Tirmidhi, At-Tirmidhi, Abu Isa at-Tirmidhi, Muhammad ibn Isa at-Tirmidhi, Imam Abu Eesa Tirmizi

Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa at-Tirmidhi (209–279 AH / 824–892 CE) was a scholar of hadith from Termez, on the Amu Darya in present-day Uzbekistan. He studied with Imam al-Bukhari among many other teachers and spent his last years in his home town, where he died in Rajab 279 AH.

His Jami — known as Jami at-Tirmidhi or Sunan at-Tirmidhi — is one of the six major hadith collections. After the narrations he gives his grading of each hadith, names other Companions who reported on the same subject and notes how the early jurists acted on it, so the book serves as a reference for comparative fiqh as well as hadith. He also compiled ash-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyyah, on the appearance and character of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
