About this book

A short, hard-hitting Urdu novel about students, farmers and mothers who stand up to a state that answers questions with batons, curfews and disappearances.

Sarkar (سرکار), subtitled The Government, is a short Urdu novel by Noor Rajpoot about ordinary people who decide that silence costs more than speaking up. In her foreword the writer says she wrote it at the urging of her own conscience rather than for any party, and openly calls it one-sided: a set of uncomfortable questions about where each of us stands when telling the truth starts to be treated as a crime.

The story moves between four corners of one country ruled by a single "Sarkar". Farmers watch their harvests fail and march on the capital. A daughter visits the wall of the jail that holds her father every day. Mothers in a snowy valley light candles for sons who never came home. On a university campus, a young student named Ayaz picks up a murdered classmate's bloodstained book and leads a protest that demands justice from a director who is shielding his own son. Peaceful sit-ins, shared meals in the night, curfews and orders to fire follow one another until fear itself begins to break.

Told in short, intense scenes and ending with a reflective closing essay, Sarkar is a complete story of about fifty pages, well suited to readers who like social and political fiction in Urdu. Readers should know that it depicts political violence, a student's suicide and enforced disappearances. Read it online or download the full PDF free on ebooks.pk.
