Dagh Dehlvi

داغؔ دہلوی

1831–1905 Also spelled: Daagh Dehlvi, Dagh Dehlavi, Nawab Mirza Khan Dagh

Dagh Dehlvi (Nawab Mirza Khan, 1831–1905) was an Urdu poet of Delhi, known above all for the ghazal. He grew up in the Red Fort in the last years of the Mughal court and learned poetry under Zauq. After 1857 he lived in Rampur and later in Hyderabad, where he became the court poet of the Nizam.

His ghazals are known for their plain, idiomatic Delhi speech, their playfulness and their teasing exchanges between lover and beloved. He had a very large circle of pupils, and many later poets counted themselves in his line.
